Police dig into gang headquarters

Twenty-nine people have been arrested after police raids on gang houses in the upper South Island and Auckland this morning.

Pipe bombs, drugs and vehicles have been seized from members of the Red Devils motorcycle gang, who police describe as puppets of the Hell's Angels.

There was no time for pleasantries as police used a digger to break through the fence of a property in Nelson's Natalie St. Today's raids were the culmination of 18 months of investigation.

"The Red Devils established themselves in this part of the world 18 months to two years ago," says Supt Gary Knowles. "We've been monitoring their activity and we've today arrested 29 persons, all the principals being the Red Devils gang, and hopefully sent a strong message to them and the Hell's Angels that they're not welcome."

Police say undercover agents infiltrated the highest levels of the Red Devils and the Hell's Angels, including Hell's Angels headquarters in Mt Eden

"Importantly the Red Devils and Hell's Angels also facilitated one of our undercover officers into the Headhunters' headquarters in Auckland," says Deputy Commissioner Rob Pope.

Last month, 30 people were arrested in an operation focused on the Rebels motorbike gang, which is a major player in Australia's methamphetamine market.

Police said the Red Devils gang was networking with the Rebels.

The headquarters of the Hells Angels gang in the Auckland suburb of Glen Eden today was raided today as part of the operation.
