DEA Outlaws Fake Marijuana

The DEA today outlawed the possession and sale of fake marijuana products, like Spice or Blaze, which are said to mimic the effects of THC, the active ingredient contained in marijuana. The ban lasts for a period of at least one year, but can be extended an additional six months.

Fake pot, which consists of plant matter coated in research chemicals, has landed an increasing number of young people in the ER with side effects like anxiety attacks, increased blood pressure, convulsions, vomiting and dangerously elevated heart rates, reports Los Angeles Times.

Fake pot has been sold through the Internet, as well as head shops and various retail outlets. The DEA says that the chemicals used in fake pot aren't approved for human consumption and there's no oversight of the manufacturing process.

The Drug Enforcement Administration on Tuesday banned for at least a year the chemicals used to make "K2" and "Spice," popular smokable herbs that mimic the marijuana high.
