Hells Angels Oshawa house demolished

OSHAWA — The once infamous Hells Angels clubhouse on Ortono Ave. will soon be just a distant memory.

Durham Regional Police and biker enforcement unit officers lined the street near Wilson Rd. S. and Hwy. 401 and watched along with area residents Tuesday morning as a backhoe ripped apart the heavily fortified house that has been a hangout for bikers for more than 20 years.

At least one neighbour, a couple who has lived nextdoor to the clubhouse for 23 years, said they had "mixed emotions" about the dwelling being demolished.

"They always treated us well and they were actually the best neighbours you could ever as for," Brad Mackenzie said, explaining the house was originally owned by Satan's Choice and the Hells Angels took it over about a decade ago.

He and his wife, Francesca, were a young couple in their 20s when they bought their first home back in 1987. But they were initially "mortified" when they learned bikers had purchased the house nextdoor two weeks after they moved in.

"We had heard all the horror stories (about biker clubs), so of course we were nervous," Francesca said. "But we quickly realized they were just regular people."
