- Biker gang tied to Petersburg

PETERSBURG - A biker gang used the city as a hub for criminal activity, federal officials revealed in an indictment Tuesday. The document says the Petersburg chapter of the American Outlaws Association conducted drug smuggling, illegal gambling, "shows of force" and laid a trap to assault rival bikers at a city bar.

A total of 27 men from across the country were indicted in Virginia with attempted murder, weapons violations, narcotics distribution, illegal gambling, assault, extortion and other crimes. Twenty-six of the men were arrested and one was killed during the federal sweep. Thomas Mayne of Maine was shot dead early Tuesday morning during a raid of his house by federal agents. Defendants are from Virginia, Wisconsin, Maine, Montana, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina.

In Milwaukee, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents served a search warrant at the American Outlaw Association headquarters, a foreboding black building adorned with red-eyed skulls over crossed pistons and a sign showing an extended middle finger. Arrested there was Jack "Milwaukee Jack" Rosga, whom federal officials described as the group's national president. A federal judge in Milwaukee ordered Rosga held Tuesday until he could be transferred to Virginia.

The city of Petersburg is listed 15 times in the 12-count indictment handed down by the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia unsealed yesterday, while Dinwiddie County is listed several times. Additionally, two men from Chesterfield - Charles "Chuck" Barlow, 43, and Dennis "Chew Chew" Haldermann, 45 - were listed as alleged members of the allied Pagans Motorcycle Club.
