Police analyst jailed for leak to bikie associate

Police analyst sentenced to seven months for leaking sensitive information to bikie gangs.
His reputation tarnished by bikie gang links and a conviction for leaking secret documents, police analyst Terry Gregoriou's career was in tatters before his sentencing on criminal charges today.
The 33-year-old, from Dean Park in Sydney's west, will serve a custodial sentence of at least seven months, with a magistrate recommending it be served in home detention.
For more than eight years, Gregoriou had top-level access to confidential information in his Parramatta-based role with NSW police, sharing an office building with some of the state's elite specialist officers.
In late 2009, covert cameras took footage of Gregoriou printing out intelligence reports from his work station and later taking them out of the building, all of which he was permitted to do in his job.
But he was found to have been unlawfully disclosing and releasing some of those reports to his best mate Peter Vasilly, who was linked to the Comanchero bikie gang.
On December 3, magistrate Lee Gilmour found him guilty of the three charges of unlawfully disclosing and releasing three of the private and confidential reports, citing ''damning'' evidence.
''Two (reports) referred to meetings between members of outlaw motorcycle gangs, one of which I don't need to go into the contents of due to the potential of harm to a person,'' Ms Gilmour said in court today.
''In terms of the breach of trust, it is a serious breach of trust.
''This type of activity undermines the community's trust of the investigation into criminal activity.''
She sentenced him to a full term of 14 months in prison, with a non-parole period of seven months.
Gregoriou will be assessed for his eligibility to serve the sentence by way of home detention and will return to court on March 3.
Gregoriou's barrister Shane McAnulty said that since the start of criminal proceedings, his client has been labelled a bikie member by some media outlets.
''He has been tarnished as a bikie from here on in and ... that has weighed heavily on his future getting of employment,'' Mr McAnulty said.
He added that the legal proceedings had taken a toll on Gregoriou's pregnant wife.
Suspended on full pay up until he was convicted on December 3, Gregoriou is now suspended without pay pending a review of his employment.
